A real little troll boy, even though he is also a human boy. In the human world his name is Theo; in Pomenia he is Teagan the Tangly Troll. Teagan is a Pomenian who lives in two worlds. The Magic Fountain foretells Teagan’s arrival in Pomenia and describes the Troll as “small, tangly-haired and persistent” — and the prophecy is quite right. Teagan the Tangly Troll’s friend and adventure companion in Pomenia is the dragon Scarytale. Teagan sometimes trips over his own tail, gets lost and stumbles, but the Troll’s heart is always firmly in the right place. “In the Magical World we adventure as magical creatures. Of course a human is a magical creature too, but people forget it. As a troll, you remember better,” explains Merlo Dreamweaver, telling why Teagan becomes a Troll.
Scarytale is a Dragon with far more flying skill — and many other talents — than he realises. Scarytale sometimes makes a bit of a mess, especially when breathing fire, but otherwise he is harmless and gentle. Scarytale protects his sensitive and rather special feet from pine needles and sharp stones with woolly socks, of which he has a huge collection of mismatched pairs. Scarytale always wears woolly socks. He has a serious sweet tooth, and his movements can often be traced by following empty sweet wrappers. Sometimes Scarytale grumbles and doubts himself, and although he has a fiery soul, he is slow to warm up. It takes him a while to adapt to new situations, but once he gets the hang of things, he can become downright boisterous.
Tula, too, becomes a little Troll when she adventures in Pomenia — and she is Teagan’s little sister! No one knows which of the siblings is tanglier or more persistent. Sometimes Teagan gives in to his sister (almost always, and on exactly the right things), while Tula very rarely gives in on anything at all. Tula’s best friend is Frida the Butterfly, who, true to her name, is much tougher than anyone would first expect a butterfly to be. Together Tula and Peppi make quite an adventure pair, and their stories will be talked about for a long time.
Gentle, empathetic and independent, Lady Lily Dragon lives in a small cottage on Posy Meadow and searches every day for the most beautiful flower in the meadow — and every day she finds it. Lily finds beauty and goodness in everything and everyone. In Scarytale’s opinion (and her own), Lily the Dragon is simply lo-ve-ly. Lily changes clothes twice, sometimes even three times a day, and has dancing shoes and a beauty cape. Lily surrounds herself with beauty.
There are about seven fairies in Pomenia, at least the last time I counted. The fairies love dancing, dressing up and good food. Their home hollow in the oak tree on the sunrise side is always delightfully messy. The fairies are not the quietest bunch, and they do not clean unless they absolutely have to. The fairies have an important task: from early summer until the later summer evenings, they gather Magic Dust from the flowers of Posy Meadow and Prettyfield with their magic spoons, place it in tiny dust bags and carry it to Princess Petronella at Enchanted Castle. Magic Dust is needed for winter and for all things good. Magic Dust makes lovely and happy things happen! Sinopia is the only fairy who dares to face Spite McGnarly. She is a self-reliant, solution-minded fairy who does everything in her own way, often against the current. Sinopia has also been described as “the end-of-the-world fairy”. Sinopia and Spite McGnarly understand one another. They give each other intellectual stimulation and a strong enough opponent. Sinopia likes dancing, just like the other fairies, but she believes life needs more than light and airy fairy days.

Princess Petronella lives in the glass Enchanted Castle in the middle of Bluewood Forest. She receives the Magic Dust gathered by the fairies and distributes it from the castle throughout Pomenia. With all her heart, she hopes that everyone will always be well. The Princess’s arrival at the castle is one of Pomenia’s oldest stories. The Princess leaves the castle only very rarely, and even then often quite secretly. “Shhh, quiet. Don’t tell anyone I’m sneaking away right now. Tiptoe-tiptoe, I secretly slip away to the Heart Tree and bring the golden moon down from the sky.” Petronella’s trusted companion is the unicorn Aneira Goldycorn. Aurinkoinen has spun gold into her mane and tail, and her coat glows with glitter and silver. By day Lumi grazes on Prettyfield, and at night she sleeps in Bluewood Forest.
Mr Mouse approaches situations by dressing for them. For Mouse, dressing is not vanity but workwear and a necessity, like armour to a knight. Although Mouse spends an enormous amount of time at the wardrobe and in front of the mirror, he is not merely self-centred; of all Pomenians, he is the one who truly puts himself on the line for everyone’s common good. He performs great feats modestly, almost in secret from others. By dressing up, Mouse gains experiences and new knowledge of life, because he is curious and full of zest for life. In a wolf suit he can experience what it feels like to be a wolf, and in a fairy dress he gets to discover life as a fairy. Mr Mouse is also extremely easy to dare into things, which greatly delights Merlo Dreamweaver.
The Bug is a wannabe bat, but actually a beetle. The Bug is sharp-tongued, bossy and domineering; he does what he wants while getting everyone else to do what he wants too. He challenges himself and takes risks. He loves anything brave — anything, as long as it is daring and something that has not been done before. Despite his hard shell, The Bug is fair-minded and community-spirited, a hard worker who helps without being asked. He makes sandwiches so there is enough for everyone. The Bug is also Pomenia’s mender, master tailor and Scarytale’s roommate.
Merlo Dreamweaver is a seer who moves between sleep and wakefulness and works magic with Magic Dust. He can visit other worlds and sometimes brings knowledge from the human world to Pomenia. Merlo Dreamweaver is Mr Mouse’s good friend, and as a mischievous humorist he eggs Mr Mouse on to silliness. Merlo Dreamweaver is relaxed by nature and a “good mover”. He climbs, balances and dances, arranging himself into fine poses. Merlo Dreamweaver wears a hat that moves according to his feelings, winding through the air and sometimes looking like a cat’s tail or a curl of smoke.
Mr Owl is a tired, slow-moving bird who rarely, if ever, manages to be interested in anything. Owl thinks talking is pointless because no one understands anyone anyway. He does not believe in conversation. Owl knows too much, and knowledge such as reading and arithmetic is not really useful in Pomenia, so Owl sleeps... snore-puff... snore... always. Hoo-hoo! Owl always has something important and significant to say...
Perdita is a sharp-tongued and sharp-minded witch who does not ask permission to do things and does nothing merely for the sake of promising. She casts powerful and original spells. She never casts the same spell twice, so magic stays interesting, surprising and fun. Her companions are Meow Scratches, a cat terrified of heights, and a chicken-shaped coffee pot that serves excellent coffee. Perdita flies on her broom above everything and is heavenly free!
Pomenia is full of joy, play and big-hearted creatures, but one spring all the beauty grows so magnificent that the Spite McGnarly becomes irritated and dangerous. Spite McGnarly would like everyone to stop dancing and playing and live as he does, quietly and unnoticed. Spite McGnarly threatens to stop the gathering and distribution of Magic Dust, and that would mean the end of magic in the Magical World. To save spring, a foretold persistent hero is needed, along with many different outfits, throwing oneself into things and flying, plenty of delicious sandwiches and brave adventure companions!
The story of Pomenia teaches that the most important thing is to dare to be yourself, whether you are the Spite McGnarly, a fairy who loves beauty and goodness, a dragon afraid of flying or a small tangly-haired troll. Jump into the Pomenia adventure.
Spite McGnarly, the Dark Wizard is worse than his reputation: a gloomy fuss-maker, a mutterer to himself, intelligent but a hermit detached from life. He would like everyone to live as he does, so the whole world would suit him and he would not need to retreat to a cave. Pomenia’s colours and sounds irritate Spite McGnarly, and he works constantly to destroy at least part of the joy. Spite McGnarly does not like life, because life is impractical and sprawling. He does not celebrate and does not like change. Almost all Pomenians are afraid of Spite McGnarly, especially of Spite McGnarly’s way of living. Houndrel lives at Gnarlynoggin with Spite McGnarly. He is the worst of biters and does not know the command “let go” — not even when Spite McGnarly says it. Houndrel has an eventful past. Originally Houndrel was a wolf, and his nose was not pink either. With his pink nose, Houndrel can smell fairies.
Varjo is attached to Spite McGnarly by a thin thread, but from there he stretches wherever he wants. Varjo whispers, plots and spies, sometimes tells the truth and sometimes lies, and entertains himself by messing things up. He loves steering situations the wrong way. Varjo has a worse nature than Spite McGnarly and no conscience whatsoever. Varjo is nasty... eek!
The nip-and-snap terrors of Spite McGnarly, the Dark Wizard’s Gnarlynoggin — Sticky and Knots. Guard spruces. Grabbing spruces. They have LONG prickly branch-arms, root-covered legs (fast), and if you are not careful, NIP SNAP they will snap you up... and they will not let go until Dark Wizard Spite McGnarly himself comes to release you (or you figure out all by yourself how to escape the wicked grip). They are not the sharpest, even if the tip of a spruce sometimes is. All the same. It is best not to go too close, and not into the whole Korpimetsä either, unless you have something really important to do... or you are a wizard, Houndrel or a bat.
In Pomenia, the Cobfibbers that live in the shadows of Prettyfield are excellent at weaving webs and drumming (with all eight of their legs). They prefer to come out only in the evening twilight. If you want to protect a piece of clothing left outside overnight from the Cobfibbers, you can sprinkle pepper on it. Otherwise the Cobfibbers may nibble it brittle during the night. Cobfibbers can flare up fiercely, but they calm down quickly. This has happened at least a million and one times, but it still does not bother anything or anyone.

Little Fox is a cheerful and curious rascal. He is interested in everything, and if he does not understand something, he finds it out. Little Fox always comes up with the nicest things to do and the best games. He is a good friend of Pixley & Pinkey. Little Fox has a big, warm heart.
Pixley & Pinkey are brothers. They look so alike that sometimes even they themselves mix up which is which. The little creatures are easily excited, but in their activities they sometimes end up making a bit of a mess — or a bit more. The boys live in a home burrow under a spruce at the edge of the forest, by Posy Meadow.
Trumpeteer is an emotional, sensitive joker, a wistful, heart-rending troubadour and a loving jammer. His set is always ready. He does not speak; he plays what he feels and what is happening. He interprets Pomenia. Trumpeteer accepts everyone just as they are and sees each one as a necessary note in the whole. Through music he can step outside time and place and is free to cross into other worlds, just like Merlo Dreamweaver.
Pomenia is home to many kinds of little critters. On Prettyfield live, among others, Lady Purty, Fumblebee, Cobfibbers and the cousins of The Bug — the real beetles. The little critters build shelters, camp, feast, love singing, acting and all sorts of things. Their absolute favourite game, playable anywhere, is tag! Did you know they hold the Great Critter Games four times a year? Neither did I... but now I do.
